Volunteer Ascension, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and developing volunteerism in Ascension Parish, held its annual Volunteer of the Year Awards on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at the Clarion Inn and Conference Center in Gonzales. St. Elizabeth Hospital Board Member, Donald Songy, was selected as Community Service Volunteer of the Year. Songy is the retired Superintendent of Ascension Parish Schools. In addition to serving on the hospital’s board, he also serves on the board of the Ascension Fund and serves as a CASA volunteer. He is a member of the East Ascension Rotary Club where he serves at Program Chair and he is co-founder of MOSS (Men of Sixty Something), a “think tank” of Ascension Parish senior men, who meet to discuss issues and solutions.

St. Elizabeth Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary member, Anna Jones, was nominated for Volunteer of the Year in the Community Service category and the hospital’s Women’s Advisory Council was nominated in the Community Group category.

Jones has been a member of the hospital’s Volunteer Auxiliary since 1997 as well as a volunteer in other community organizations. She has touched countless lives and donated over 5,000 hours of her time since then. She was selected as St. Elizabeth Hospital’s volunteer of the year in 2009.

The Women’s Advisory Council is a group of professional women who volunteer their time to provide valuable input to the hospital and help to extend the presence of the hospital to the community. The group has been in existence for well over twelve years. The Women’s Advisory Council sponsors numerous fund-raising and educational events in the community throughout the year including an annual Women’s Health Luncheon, Lenten Gumbo Sale and Jewelry Shows to benefit charitable organizations. The group also sponsors four nursing scholarships to deserving nursing students each year.
