Part of St. Elizabeth Hospital’s continuing efforts at improving quality is participation in a national initiative for public reporting of quality measures promoted by organizations including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and The Joint Commission.
What are quality measures and why are they important?
Quality Measures, also called Core Measures, refer to specific sets of guidelines in the treatment of four of the most common and costly conditions: Acute Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack), Heart Failure, Pneumonia, and Surgical Infection. These quality measures are important because research has shown that following these guidelines leads to significantly better outcomes.
What do these results mean?
Quality measures indicate how well a hospital is doing in following specific guidelines as a percentage of applicable cases, and provides a comparison to the national average.
It is important to remember that interpreting these results may be difficult since there are times when it may be best for a patient that a guideline is not specifically followed. For instance, it is recommended that aspirin be given to heart attack patients on arrival to the hospital, but some patients are allergic to aspirin.
It is also important to keep in mind that a small number of cases may distort the final results.

Are Core Measures the only indicator of quality care?
No. Core Measures, which show the rate at which hospitals across the nation adhere to specific guidelines, are only one of the measurements used to monitor quality. Other quality indicators include patient satisfaction, accreditation by The Joint Commission, quality awards that a hospital may have received, and physician satisfaction.
The safety and satisfaction of our patients and our guests are a top priority at St. Elizabeth Hospital. In 2005, St. Elizabeth Hospital received the prestigious Compass Award by the national firm of Press Ganey for significant improvement in patient satisfaction.
St. Elizabeth Hospital is fully accredited by The Joint Commission. It is listed in the top five percent of all hospitals surveyed earning St. Elizabeth Hospital The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval.
St. Elizabeth Hospital was named the 2006 Hospital of the Year (100 beds or less) by the Louisiana Nurses Foundation and received the Voluntary Hospital Association (VHA) Award for Clinical Excellence for the treatment of Heart Attack in 2006, and the VHA Award for Clinical Excellence for the treatment of Congestive Heart Failure in 2007. St. Elizabeth Hospital also received the Louisiana Quality Foundation's Louisiana Excellence Performance Award (LEPA) at Level III in 2008 for overall organizational quality.
St. Elizabeth has nationally ranked in the top 1% for physician satisfaction for the past four years as measured by the independent Jackson Organization/HealthStream Research. St. Elizabeth Hospital has also been ranked in the top 5% in the nation in team member satisfaction for the past six years as measured by the independent research firms Press Ganey and Morehead Associates.
